Living and Nonliving Organisms
Objective: Students will identify and classify living and nonliving organisms in the environment.
Materials:
-Pictures of living and nonliving things
-Chart/butcher paper
-Tape
-Construction paper
-Colored pencils
Events of Instruction:
1. Teacher will pass out pictures of living/nonliving things to each student. Individually, the students will bring up their picture, tell class what the picture is, and place in the Living or Nonliving column on the chart/butcher paper according to what they think. Ask students why they made their choice.
2. After students have made their choice of wether their picture is living or nonliving, have students raise their hands to give similarities of the living things and then nonliving things to generate characteristics. Ask questions/correct those pictures placed in the wrong category. Write responses on the chart/butcher paper.
3. Discuss characteristics of living/nonliving things based on the similarities the students discovered and explain the concept of classifying to determine the difference.
4. Provide students with construction paper and colored pencils and instruct them to make a shutter fold. On the left outside fold, have students write "Living" on the cover as well as the characteristics. Do the same for "Nonliving" on the other fold. On the inside of each. Have students draw three pictures each of living and nonliving things that they can see from where they are sitting (looking out the window is allowed)
5. Have students pair and share what they drew for thier living and nonliving.
5. Collect foldable for assessment. Check for correct characteristics and placement of living/nonliving thing. Also listen for student conversation during pair and share to see if other students have corrected peers who may have classified incorrect.
*Keep chart up in class through living systems lesson as student reference.
**Differentiation:
Assist: Allow struggling students to partner together. Allow struggling students to refer to chart made in class.
Challenge: Challenge more advanced students with having them draw more pictures. Have them think of living/nonliving thigns in a particular city.
